The Game of Thrones spin-off lands on August 21, 2022 and will immerse viewers in the lives of the great families of the saga. But Stark fans might be surprised.
Several years after the broadcast of the last season of Game Of Thrones, fans of the saga written by George RR Martin have several reasons to rejoice. Not only does the series benefit from a prequel – that is, a spin-off that takes place before the original series – but it was recently revealed that the series House of the Dragon would stage a beloved family of Westeros: the Starks. Yes, the Targaryens will not be the only ones to be at the heart of this new series, even if House of the Dragon will still be mainly focused on the ancestors of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). As a reminder, the series takes place approximately 200 years before the facts of Game Of Thrones and is interested in the rise to power of the Targaryen familyuntil the internal conflict that tore them apart, the famous “Dance of the Dragons”.
In House of the Dragon however, the Tagaryans will rub shoulders with a few Stark family characters, including one who might drastically change the opinion of the Starks that fans have formed thanks to Game Of Thrones. In the main series, Ned Stark (Sean Bean) is the big good guy in the story and all of the family members are portrayed as heroes. Far from Ned, Robb (Richard Madden) or even Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), it’s Cregan Stark who will have a big role to play in the spin-off, especially during his Pact of Ice and Fire with Rhaenyra Targaryen. Even though this alliance that the northern overlord and queen Rhaenyra will pass on might not appear until the second season of the series, the establishment of the collaboration between the Starks and the Targaryens should be followed from the first season of House of the Dragon.
But who is this famous Cregan Stark and how does he differ from the Starks that viewers have already seen in Game Of Thrones ? He’s just one of the Lords of Winterfell, noted not only for the longevity of his reign but also for his ruthlessness. He is described as a tough man who does not tolerate traitors, liars and regicides. And it is a facet of his personality which will be discovered above all during the hour of the wolf, a very short period at the end of the Dance of the Dragons during which Cregan Stark manages to conquer Port-Réal and to impose his law there thanks to his iron fist. It was during this period, which only lasted seven days, that all the great families of southern Westeros realized how cruel and bloodthirsty the Starks could be.
