A Game of Thrones: The Board Game – Digital Edition will be free alongside Car Mechanic Simulator 2018 this week on the Epic Games Store.

Epic Games has announced A Game Of Thrones: The Board Game – Digital Edition will be one of this week’s freebies on the Epic Games Store. The free game system through Epic Games was launched in 2018 and has since offered players over 100 free titles. This has included options like Rocksteady’s batman arkham series, Grand Theft Auto 5and Jurassic World: Evolution among many others.

Unlike Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, Epic Games store’s service doesn’t require a paid subscription to access at this time. The games are available to all with an Epic Games account, which is free to set up and offers between one and three free titles every Thursday. Epic has confirmed this will continue through at least the end of 2022 but hasn’t elaborated on what type of subscription service could be offered once the free games access closes.

In an exciting announcement, Epic Games Store (via. GameSpot) has revealed that until June 30 at 8 AM PT/11 AM ET, players will be able to claim two popular titles: A Game of Thrones: The Board Game – Digital Edition and Car Mechanic Simulator 2018. Both games offer very different goals, as Car Mechanic Simulator 2018 sees players diagnosing and fixing problems across a variety of vehicles, and A Game of Thrones: The Board Game – Digital Edition is an adaptation of Fantasy Flight Games’ acclaimed strategy board game based on George RR Martin’s A Song Of Ice And Fire novels.

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game – Digital Edition is set after the death of King Robert Baratheon during the first A Song Of Ice And Fire novel and can be played as a group of up to six players. There is also the option to play against the game’s AI, which assumes the role of one of the Great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms. Much like the novels and HBO’s Game Of Thrones adaptation, A Game of Thrones: The Board Game – Digital Edition revolves around who will claim the Iron Throne and take control of Westeros. The game offers a variety of options to achieve this goal, including conquering with brute force, forging alliances, or cunningly coercing others. Since its release in 2020, DLCs have been added focusing on later books in the series, such as A Feast For Crows and A Dance With Dragons.

Both Fantasy Flight Games’ original Game Of Thrones board game and Asmodee Digital’s PC adaptation have been widely praised by fans of tabletop strategy games, making the offer by Epic Games all the more enticing for players. The game’s story appears to have caught up to the Game Of Thrones novelswith 2011’s A Dance With Dragons currently being the last published novel in the series. However, it is yet to be seen whether A Game of Thrones: The Board Game – Digital Edition will wait for the final two novels, or if it will choose to continue the story via DLC regardless like HBO’s controversial TV adaptation.
