The joys, misfortunes and challenges experienced by the Crawley family and the servant team led by cantankerous butler Carson, are just one way to tell the story of the castle itself. And what a castle. Downton Abbey is actually called highclere. Located in Hampshire, 90 kilometers east of London, this architectural gem takes the form it knows today thanks to renovations carried out in 1842 by Sir Charles Barry, known for having led the reconstruction of the Palace of Westminster . Large living rooms, library and dining room that we see in the series are open to visitors as well as some of the 300 rooms of the monument, the kitchens and the servants’ quarters. Visitors can also walk through the 400 hectares of wooded parks, and stop at the Etruscan temple to admire the view of the castle, as the characters like to do in the series.

From the snowy plains of the North to the steppes of Essos via the Mediterranean landscapes of Dorne, the variety of landscapes in the universe of Game Of Thrones forced the creators of the series to shoot around the world. But many scenes in the HBO-produced series were filmed in Northern Ireland.

To start with Castle Ward, in the southwest of the region. This 18th-century castle hosted many outdoor scenes from the first two seasons. The historic site, worth visiting for its eccentric mansion mixing Gothic and Palladian styles, upload a map allowing to better find the places appearing in the scenes of the series, like the fall of Bran from the tower of Winterfell, the tournament between Gregor Clegane and Loras Tyrell or the arrival of Robert Baratheon at the Starks.

But many scenes were filmed at Titanic Studios, in County Down 30 minutes south of Belfast, where the series’ sets were recreated. The site renamed Game of Thrones Studio Touropen to the public since February 2022, allows fans to enter the Iron Throne Room, the Winterfell Crypts or the Hall of Faces.

Peaky Blinders in Birmingham

Dark suit, a smoking cigarette between his lips and, above all, a beret pulled down on his head. In Birmingham, the shadow of the Peaky Blinders, this mafia of the end of the 19th century, is still very present, revived by the series broadcast on Netflix. One can taste, in this city located in the West Midlands, this fascination aroused by the gangsters of the Shelby family. And in particular in the Black Country Living Museum, where several scenes from the series were filmed. We recognize in particular the shipyard managed by “Uncle Charlie”, where the illegal goods of the Peaky Blinders transit. The most devoted fans will take part in the Peaky Blinders nightsorganized in September and October 2022. The opportunity to become, for an evening, a member of the Shelby family during an immersive experience.

Social adventures inspired by the novels of Julia Quinn take place in sumptuous settings of the British high nobility. To the delight of fans of the series, many scenes were shot in very real monuments. Starting with the family home of the Bridgerton family which, in reality, is a private residence called the Ranger House. This Georgian villa located in the district of Greenwich, in London, is open to visitors and houses the Wernher collection: more than 700 works including medieval sculptures, enamels, jewels and Renaissance paintings.

The majestic residence of the Duke of Hastings, Daphne’s suitor during season 1, is in York, in the north of the country. It is Castle Howard, built between the 18th and 19th centuries in Baroque and Palladian style. An exhibition there traces until October 30, 2022 the various appearances of the castle in cinema and television.
