HBO seems to have heard the lamentations of fans, devastated by the exile imposed on Jon Snow in the last episode of “Game of Thrones” – the most popular series in the channel’s history. If we are to believe The Hollywood Reportera sequel would be under study, adding to the long list of projects derived from the original series, based on the work of George RR Martin.
Unlike the original series, famous for its bloated cast, the new series will focus exclusively on the character of Jon Snow. The bastard of the Stark family, played by Kit Harington, had discovered, in the eighth and final season, that he belonged to the Targaryen line and could potentially claim the Iron Throne.
The development of this suite constitutes “a new approach to how HBO taps into George RR Martin’s fantasy universe, quite comparable to what Disney+ is doing with Star Wars and Marvel, which have given the streamer several hits with character-centric series, like WandaVision and Obi-Wan Kenobi”observe The Hollywood Reporter.
The professional title further questions the fate of the other characters in the series. “In theory, the project could open the door to the reappearance of other characters” having survived the final season of Games of Thrones, “including Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie)”.
However, no details were provided by HBO on a possible synopsis, title or development schedule; and even if the project materializes, the indestructible Jon Snow should not return to television screens for several years.
Including this latest project, there are now seven Game of Thrones spin-off series currently in development at HBO, to which must be added the only one already filmed, “House of the Dragon”which takes place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and whose first episode will be broadcast on August 22 in the United States.
