The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer host, Matt Lucas, has responded to claims of favouritism, following his stint as a contestant during the show’s latest episode (April 5).

During the show, Lucas chose to join DJ Annie Mac, comedian Ed Gamble and rapper Example in the tent and try his own hand at making some baking goods, for the first time since joining the program in 2020.

However, after receiving help from judge Paul Hollywood with his dough and even getting the seldom-earned Hollywood Handshake, he received some backlash for being favored over other contestants.

Not one to back away from criticism, Lucas took to Twitter to share his thoughts about the ‘nepotism’ claims.

“Say what you like,” he said. “I don’t care. I got a Hollywood Handshake and I won the Technical. Plus I know where they keep the Star Baker aprons so I’m going to take one anyway. Plus I’m an icon and a national treasure.”

It had been his first ever try at baking biscuits that earned him the sought-after handshake, which gave him the perfect opportunity to offer his own input on the experience later on.

“His hands felt a bit coarse, like a builder’s,” Matt had noted.

The host did great in the first two rounds of the bake-off, but it was the final round that cost him his Star Baker apron. Instead, the title went to Example and his intricate Australian landscape novelty cake.

In the end, while Matt’s ambiguous couch cake, reminiscent of his babysitting days, was nowhere near perfect, he took comfort in the knowledge that he knew where the Star Baker aprons were kept and could “get one anyway”.

The Great British Bake Off airs on Channel 4 in the UK. In the US, it’s known as The Great British Baking Showand streams on Netflix.
