The Last Kingdom is one of Netflix’s big hits of the moment. The show has always been something of a cult hit; despite being one of the best historical dramas to come along in years, for whatever reason it never quite broke through and enjoyed the broad mainstream success it deserves. That’s not to say it’s not still loved by an awful lot of people though, and according to the Nielson they came out in droves to see how Uhtred’s story would wrap up.
Nielson has just released the streaming numbers for the week of March 7, when The Last Kingdom released its final season. Per TV Linethe show took the home the crown for the most-streamed show of the week with an impressive 1.423 billion minutes watched across its entire 46 episodes.
Pieces of Her was hot on Uhtred’s tail with 1.415 billion minutes. Those two shows knocked Inventing Annathe previous week’s champion, down a few runs to third place with 812 million minutes watched.
Those three shows are all from Netflix, but Amazon had a pretty respectable showing, with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel coming in fourth with 702 million minutes watched. Upload and Reacher also made their way onto the list. This marks the first time that Prime Video has ever had three shows in the Nielson top 10 in any given week.
All in all, it’s good news for Uhtred. It’s about time he and his got the recognition they deserve; lord knows King Alfred and his son Edward certainly aren’t going to give it to them.
Since The Last Kingdom is a show about family, politics and war set against a medieval backdrop, it should come as no surprise that its inspiring a lot of comparisons to Game Of Thrones. Yet while Thrones‘ending was extremely controversial (to put it mildly), The Last Kingdom seems to have ended on a high note with fans. “The Last Kingdom on Netflix had the final season Game Of Thrones should of had. WHAT AN ENDING,” tweeted one fan. “Game Of Thrones rushed the ending, where as The Last Kingdom was consistently brilliant,” said another.
It’s way better than Games of Thrones.

Twitter is literate with feelings like these. It’s often said that you can judge a show by its weakest link, but The Last Kingdom is one of those rare series that didn’t have a single weak link throughout its entire run.
We can only agree that the praise is very well earned. Destiny is all!
The Last Kingdom follow up movie Seven Kings Must Diewhich will relate the final chapter of Uhtred’s life as told in the ending volumes of Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories novels, has wrapped filming. No release date has yet been announced. In the mean time, now that The Last Kingdom is out in its entirety, it’s a great time to re-watch the whole thing.
What do you think? Was The Last Kingdom better than Game Of Thrones?
